Victoire Car Mascot

Car Mascots were designed by Rene lalique in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Styles.
The most famous is the Victoire but there are Czech Copies of this car mascot from the original moulds around.The originals are much crisper and have engraved signatures.
The copies are with acid etched signatures.

These were either of Glass or a mixture of Bronze and Glass.

Some have been copied by other manufacturers so please ensure the Lalique Signature is on the piece.

Especially popular with collectors are the range of semi-draped or nude ladies and the Eagle Head mascots.

The VICTOIRE ( a ladies head with Flying hair streaming back) is the most sought after car mascot.

Things to look out for - chips and scratches on the glass are not unusual and are a sign sometimes of authenticity as it shows the piece probably was used on a car.

Some pieces have the bronze base removed and have been used as rather classy paperweights - they are more valuable with the base.

Some earlier models were actually also produced as paperweights too.
One of the earliest Car Mascots was Grand Libellule (a dragonfly).

Some but not all were also fitted with a light bulb in the base to make them glow at night. These look gorgeous.
Car mascots in coloured glass are fairly rare.

Many Manufacturers in the 20s and 30s ordered Lalique car mascots for their automobiles as they added a certain touch of luxury to their models.

Many were actually produced as paperweights and bookends.

Deux Sirenes - deux sirènes nues cabriolez au-dessous d'un hémisphère givré - morceau renversant. En verre clair ou ambre (lalique indubitable)
Chiffres de Douze - sections givrées de verre avec les nymphes élevées sur chaque section
Eglantines - cuvette givrée blanche avec les bâtis renversants des roses douces de briar
Etoiles - le disque clair RENVERSANT avec des undreds d'or tient le premier rôle partout lui et le dôme au centre
Fougeres - verre givré semblant Modernistic avec des ailes de verre
Gaillon - cuvette givrée avec les tasses givrées par pendant
Grand Fleur - cuvette opaque rose avec la fleur simple énorme et les graines centrales

Monnaie du Pape - cuvette claire avec le modèle des feuilles.
Moineaux - appui 4 d'anneaux en verre clairs au-dessus d'une boîte carrée avec la frise des oiseaux et des feuilles. Nan-King - cuvette givrée géométrique faite en relier ensemble des triangles chacune avec plus de triangles dans elle-même.
Noisetier - dôme pendant avec la base en verre givré et les ailes feuillues ci-dessus.
Palmes - l'appui simple avec les disques en verre tient 4 boîtes jointes avec le modèle en feuille de palmier sur en dehors de de chacun
Papillons - en forme de tambour avec la frise des papillons avec rayonner la cuvette dessous.
Plaques de Papillons - cuvette en verre claire dans les sections avec les papillons opaques moulés
Passiflore - boule opaque en verre avec l'étamine saillante de fleurs de passiflore (fleurs de passion) de chaque fleur.
Ravenne - le verre givré d'art déco ressemble à une crinoline carrée avec des bandes. La frontière pendante du marbre en verre aiment des perles et une copie miniature de elle-même ci-dessous.
Rinceaux - le modèle d'art déco courbe overlaping partout le dôme. Espace libre ou or Ronces - blanc ou cuvette givrée par rose avec les mûres appliqued
Soleil - bleu de cuvette claire avec le modèle géométrique et de dômes clairs partout il.
Stockholm 1 - Cuvette jaune pâle d'art déco avec les feuilles et l'appui pyramidic horizontaux des anneaux en verre clairs.
Stockholm II - semblable à Stockholm I mais avec le modèle géométrique ci-dessous
Vendome - élégant soucoupe-comme le lustre avec le bambou comme l'appui ci-dessus.
Ville Neuve - cuvette d'or avec 4 butins d'Al blanc en verre opale rond. Beau.
Veronne - le verre opale jaune avec des feuilles et les pétales aiment le lis d'eau recouvrant tout Rappelez-vous - si un lustre de Lalique semble nouveau et vient dans une boîte scellée que c'est probablement une reproduction.

This is an AUDIO on this goblet where Christoper Cook and Reino Liefkes talk about a blue glass goblet, originally from the Paris International Exhibition of 1855.

The Paris Exhibition featured the most Beautiful Arts and Crafts of the time.

It is from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London which is the National collection
of Glass - they have over 6000 Pieces of outstanding glass in their collection and it is well worth visiting,

Art Nouveau is more than just a style.
Translated from French to English it means New Art - but it is more than just that..

In fact that is what the Art Nouveau movement was all about.
Unlike some styles, Art nouveau incorporated glass,silver,stained glass,posters,furniture,jewellery,Art,Metalwork,Pottery ,bronze and other sculpture and textiles.All artistic forms were influenced (although some discarded the movement as unworthy ! Strangely enough their work is usually unrecognised today .)

It was more a way of thinking and designing than slavish copies of a common theme.
Naturalistic themes were common but even these were transformed into dream-like pieces with an air of fantasy and other-worldliness.
Some of the motive forces behind the movement were the leaders in their fields.
Alphonse Mucha for his Art and Posters, Klimt for his gorgeously rich
works of Art, Rene Lalique for his fantastical jewelry and exquisite glassware. (I just LOVE his Dragonflies - perhaps because I have them in my garden !)
All of these are now household names and highly collectable.
Potters joined in with amazing designs as did silversmiths with curved and flowing jewelry.

Rings,Necklaces and bracelets in Art Nouveau designs became the highly desired pieces of jewelry that any fashionable lady of the turn of the 19h Century needed to own to stay in fashion.
Actresses and Royalty took up the style and this filtered down to almost every European and American woman.
Sarah Bernhardt alone was a huge influence by advising Lalique to produce his fantasy designs in Jewelry.
The main difference was exactly that the designs were SO very different - very strange - unearthly in fact.
By picking up hints of fairyland,mermaid,niads or nymphs were incorporated into a fantasyworld unequalled even today..
Before all of theses fields were very traditional and mainly unchanged for many years before.

It was the genius of these designers that altered the perception that everyday objects and Jewels did not have to be exactly as nature designed them or indeed as they are viewed in the real world
The movement was widely copied and altered so that similar changes took place in the countries of Germany,Austria and America where artists adapted art nouveau designs to mesh in with ther own work.
Jugendstihl in Germay brought forth art nouveau fantastical pottery and the movement made huge inroads into jewellery design with companies like Liberty in England and numerous french silversmiths working hard to catch up with the demand from excited customers.

Without the Art Nouveau movement we would have lost many delights in what we term as the real world !.
(But which IS the real world ? )

Wine and Famous Artists
Lucian Freud has just deigned a new wine label for
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2006.
While the wine is obviously superb, the label by Freud
adds an exotic upmarket touch.
It is of course a Family Tradition in the Rothschild Family.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild commissioned Jean Carlu to design a label in 1924 for the first vintage
bottled entirely at the Chateau.
He also commissioned a label with V for Victory at the end of World War II
Other labels by Marc Chagall,Francis Bacon ,Andy Warhol and Wassily Kandinsky also grace his wine Labels.
It is delightful to see fine art in conjection with the finest of wines.
Also it is rather interesting that many other vineyards have now adopted the similar system of ungrading their wine labels with collectable Art.(not that any Chateau Rothschild wine even remotely needed upgrading of course !)

George Baselitz,

I have even seen wine Labels featuring paintings by the Great Masters of the Past including Leonardo da Vinci
But which glass to use to drink them from ?

I forgot to mention that many famous artists (including myself of course) (well famous for 12 miles in any direction !)- prefer to be paid in wine - a pretty good deal for those chosen to design for Chateau Rothschild I think !

Edward the VIIth was given this cigarette case with a snake biting its tail (The Ouobouros ) by his mistress Mrs Keppel.

Mrs Keppel was also the great,great grandmother of Camilla Parker-Bowles - now the Duchess of Cornwall
